Enhanced Data Integration Delivers Efficiencies to Telepharmacy Solution

Enhanced Data Integration Delivers Efficiencies to Telepharmacy Solution

Case Study Overview

EMR Integration:

The Challenge

PipelineRx offers a combination of virtual pharmacist services, often referred to as telepharmacy, and clinical pharmacy software that allows hospitals of all sizes to optimize pharmacy staffing and workflow to reduce labor costs and improve patient care. This also frees up more pharmacist resources to address high-value clinical services, such as patient discharge management and antimicrobial stewardship, and to round with care teams.

Because hospital and health systems use a variety of electronic health record (EHR) platforms and dated HL7 technology, PipelineRx virtual pharmacists frequently found themselves juggling five or more windows on a single monitor as they worked to review and verify medication orders from different facilities. In order to get the data they needed, the telepharmacists also had to access native files, take screenshots, attach spreadsheets and copy the data to the EHR as required by state laws. This caused repetitive tasks and inefficient use of the pharmacist time, in addition to the potential for inadvertent errors.

In order to make their SaaS-based solution work seamlessly, PipelineRx needed a partner that could enable them to pull in unverified pharmacy data and verify it in PowerGridRx for easy access.

The Solution

PipelineRx deployed Emissary – a proven application programming interface (API) solution – from Sansoro Health to enhance its software solution and better serve their hospital and health system customers.

Emissary seamlessly integrates with third-party applications to make data more liquid – including information provided by EHR platforms. The API allows for swift integration and provides the flexibility to pull medication orders entered by the physician – including both structured and unstructured data. In addition, it enables streamlined, automated and efficient workflow for labor-intensive administrative functions.

Working with PipelineRx, Sansoro Health’s integration team was able to quickly customize and deploy Emissary to enhance the performance of the pharmacy platform.

“We looked at many vendors that offered interface engines, but Sansoro Health had experience with the various EHR platforms,” said Sean Parsons, Senior Solutions Architect at PipelineRx. “Emissary appealed to us because it was quick and easy to integrate with our software.

It allowed us to obtain the unverified order information from EHR providers, and that’s the key to providing health systems with an effective telepharmacy solution.”

“Interoperability between systems is the next logical evolution in hospital IT… This is a game changer in getting true medication management to the next level, managing transitions of care and working across care settings.”

– Brian Roberts, CEO of PipelineRx

With Emissary capturing the real-time data from EHR vendors, PipelineRx virtual pharmacists can work from just one or two open windows and serve the needs of several health systems as they verify orders.

“The reliability of the data is critical and we can now count on getting the information required for each order,” said Eric Carter, Vice President of Integration at PipelineRx. “Pharmacists see the information electronically and the platform itself makes the data more timely.”

The solution securely retrieves medication orders and encounters every two minutes, providing pharmacists with critical information about patient allergies, care provider observations, lab results and more. In addition, the telepharmacists no longer have to access native files, do screen shots, attach spreadsheets and copy the data to the EHR, which dramatically reduces the potential for errors and other issues.

Emissary has made the Telepharmacy Services software more reliable and allowed telepharmacists to be more efficient. With Sansoro Health’s APIs supporting its software, PipelineRx telepharmacists can deliver faster turnaround times and follow healthsystem-specific policies and procedures more effectively to ensure accuracy and timeliness. This saves both PipelineRx and their customers valuable dollars, time and effort.

“The Emissary platform would be my first choice and recommendation to any health system moving away from HL7,” said Neil Ratcliff, Implementation Manager at PipelineRx. “The product and project management Sansoro Health provides makes them an excellent partner.”
